I have suffered with back issues, particularly lower back issues, for several years. About a year ago, I was cleaning the house and overworked my back. When I bent over to pick something up, I felt a pop in my lower back and couldn’t stand up for a few seconds. When I was able to stand up, I had a pinpoint pain in my lower back, and the pain will come and go depending on daily activities. It would hurt to move and function. Recently, if I overworked my back and/or stood up for too long, the pain in my back would return and my entire leg would go numb. I have tried cortisone shots and pain medicine to help cope with the pain. Unfortunately, this is only putting a bandaid on the problem instead of fixing it…
Last week, I finally visited my primary care physician for a physical. I asked her what I should do to fix my back pain. She said strengthening my core and the muscles in my back would help solve the problem. Honestly, I have had many excuses to avoid exercise. I am either too fatigued and in too much pain to exercise. Also, I wasn’t sure how to approach exercise as a fibromyalgia sufferer for fear of aggravating my condition. I am now actively working to overcome that fear. It may seem counterintuitive, but exercise will help relieve your pain.
This blog builds on my previous blog “Fibromyalgia and Exercise”. A few days ago I found a YouTube channel called COCOLIME FITNESS. When you visit this YouTube channel, you will discover several exercise videos geared for fibromyalgia and pain sufferers. COCOLIME FITNESS is the work of a young woman who also suffers from fibromyalgia. She shares her experiences, discoveries, and successes as well as leading the various exercises. She is in great shape, has a positive attitude, and an inspiration to others.
I have tried her following videos so far:
-Low Impact Easy Cardio Dance Workout: Super easy and lots of fun!
-10 Minute Ab Workout for Fibromyalgia Pain – Abs & Back Fibro-Fit Toning: This is a great exercise to strengthen your core. She provides modifications to some of the exercises if your not feeling 100%. This exercise video includes planks in particular, and it is taking some time for me to adjust to doing these types of exercises.
-Stretch for Tight Hips, Sciatica and Low Back Pain Relief – I did this exercise video for the first time today and really enjoyed it. She has you do several easy stretches that felt really good. Stretching is key for many reasons, especially to help with stiffness caused by fibromyalgia. These stretches can also help flatten your tummy.
-How I Control My Fibromyalgia Pain With These 5 Natural Tips – This is not an exercise video, but a video where she talks about ways to control her pain. It has a lot of great information.
She also has exercise videos that are not geared toward fibromyalgia sufferers.
I am looking forward to exploring her YouTube Channel site further, doing her exercise videos on a regular basis, implementing some of her advice, and checking out her other social media sites! Please check out her COCOLIME FITNESS YouTube Channel and support the incredible work she is doing to help fibromyalgia sufferers.
I will update you after doing these exercises for awhile.
